I'll be giving a talk this afternoon here at Denison on rhyolite generation, so I might be a little brief this morning.

The province of Albay in the Philippines is on alert for both a typhoon and a volcano (that country seems to be hit with that 300,000 may need to be ready to evacuate if the volcano continues to show signs that it might erupt - in fact, Mayon is producing ash as of this morning, albeit only one minor ash explosion.
Lava flows from Kilauea are drawing crowds as they inundate a road in Kalapana. There is a nice video link to the gawkers watching the lava ooze its way across the access road (very very slowly). The lava flow seemed to have stopped after crossing the road, but now it appears to be continuing to head to the sea.
Lastly, the NASA Earth Observatory has posted a couple new images worth a peak: one is of the current plume at Chaiten in Chile, the other of the activity at Shiveluch in Russia.

While we have to wait for things to develop further at Mayon, we can now take a look at the Soufrière Hills volcano (Montserrat) in real time: the MVO (www.montserratvolcanoobservatory.info) is providing images from a monitoring camera. As of 17.58 h (time indicated in image frame) there's quite some pyroclastic flow activity visible.

Wow Boris, how have I missed this updated MVO website until now? I think they have set the bar for Volcano Observatory sites - lots of info, webcams and well organized. Kudos to the MVO folks.

That undated pic of Mayon: it looks very like the 1993 lava flow down the SE flank in the middle of the image, which would give an upper age limit for its date

If you do not mind me asking, what exactly are you utilizing to stop junk comments? I noticed your blog is good and free from all the spam bots leaving comments. I own another blog myself, and I just like to keep comments open so I do not have to come on and approve them all the time, but the spam plugins I’ve tried out usually are failing to block even the most obvious and basic spam comments. I can relate- I ate less when I was 25 lbs heavier than I do now not only in volume but I think in calories as well. It definitely is related to the quality of the food! Also, I have way more energy after a pile of veggies/fruits/good proteins than I do even after a little bit of junk. Amazing how the body really knows and appreciated good, healthy food.

I'm currently deployed to afghanistan, between my firm we now have counter strike 1.5 some of us wish to play towards each other. We dont have web for personal computers. We do have a wireless router although, is it potential to lan some computer systems together and play against one another, should you could clarify how you can that might be great, i have no idea what the router's we've are i am pretty certain they're linksys though.

DWD: Good question and one thats hard to predict. I expect crossover voting to favor Brown but the real surge for him has been among independents. Its why hes even in the game at this point, even given Coakleys horrible performance to date.
