Alright, there has been some complaints that the last few MVPs have been too easy, so I tried to reach back and find one that might be more of a challenge for you all. Maybe this photo will do the trick ...

Current standings:
Don Crain - 2
volcanista - 1
Elizabeth - 1
Ralph - 1
gijs - 1
Anne - 1
Cam - 1
gg - 1
The Bobs - 1
Boris Behncke - 1

Good luck!

Definitely not too easy this time, Erik. I'm stumped, but I'm going to guess Bazman in Iran.

3

.. or possibly Mr. Damavand also in Iran.

Not sure but it does have a look of Mount Teide on Tenerife in the Canary Islands....

Tacora in Chile

7

Looks like Mt. St. Helens circa late April or early May, 1980.

Posted by: Mike | November 9, 2009 9:00 AM

8

Also looks a lot like Mt. Adams (minus the glaciers, so not a good guess).

Is it Arenal Volcano in Costa Rica?

Posted by: Karen | November 9, 2009 9:31 AM

Then again, it could be Misti in Peru.

Mount Zuqualla?

I think Ollagüe in Bolivia, but I miss to see the fumarolic activity. But South-America is very likely!

15

There looks to be some fumarolic activity in the MVP-volcano, just above what I think is Ollagüe's dome.

Congrats, Gijs, you got it back at #9. This is indeed Ollague on the Chilean/Bolivian border. I took this photo from the platform of lava to the south of Volcan Pabellon and north of Volcan Chela (both to the west of Ollague) in November of 2000. Glad this photo was a bit more of a challenge.

I was going to guess somewhere in the central-southern Andes, but I had no hope of pinning it down any further. I remember Peter Francis' *Volcanoes* had a lot of photos from the Bolivian/Chilean Andes and this volcano has that 'feel'. Most regions are dissimilar like that :-)

There is something on the chilean volcanoes that you can recognize them immediatly in the photo. It's funny to read about St. Helens or Adams when you can view clearly the extreme dry conditions of the Atacama Desert in the picture.

Well, never truly thought of it like that, but I reckon it could happen. Don't criticise it untill you 've tried it, or till it passes to you, whichever the case. Hold it up.

I added your blog to bookmarks. And i’ll read your articles more often! Before this, it would be possible for the government to arrest you just based on whatever you were saying, if they didn’t like it.
