Speaking of Bill Gray...

Category: Climate change
Posted on: June 6, 2006 2:24 PM, by Kevin Vranes

Mr. Backseatdriving (Brian Schmidt) has a hilarious Wikipedia swipe at Bill Gray here in which Brian updated Gray's Wiki page to reflect certain realities. The Wiki page is here and this is what Brian added:

Attempted betting on global warming

Like global warming skeptic Richard Lindzen, Professor Gray stated, "I'll take on any scientist in this field .... I predict that in 5 to 8 years the globe will begin to cool".[2] When contacted, he refused to accept any bets as to whether temperatures would drop.[3], [4]

Some have a distaste for the betting crusade that Brian and James have been on, but I think it's great. I say that if you're willing to be as brashly "you are all full of it" as Gray and Lindzen have been, then you need to put your money where your mouth is. I have great respect for Gray and Lindzen as scientists, so I wish that they would reciprocate by not disrespecting the climate community in general by coming across as utterly dismissive. They could go a long way toward proving that their opinions are sincere and not just bombast by putting up or shutting up.

Brian's round-up on global warming betting is here and James' is here.

The funny thing is that after watching Gray's Senate testimony and then talking to him, I kind of like the guy. Guess I have a soft spot for unpretentious curmudgeons. Too bad he's doing such damage, and won't back up his position with his own money.

Somebody who knows more than I about the good work he's done on hurricanes should add that to his wiki page, to balance out the awful stuff he's doing now.

I AM A HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT AND ONE OF MY ASSIGNMENTS IS TO DO AN INTENSIVE PAPER ON MY CHOSEN SUBJECT WHICH IS GOLBAL WARMING. I AM SEARCHING FOR TWO EXPERTS WHO ARE ACCREDITED OR PUBLISHED, ONE FROM EACH POINT OF VIEW, WHO CAN GIVE ME A 30 MINUTE PHONE INTERVIEW AND THEN EVALUATE MY PAPER. I AM HOPING SOMEONE IS WILLING TO HELP MY GENERATION GET INFORMED ON THIS SUBJECT SO WE CAN MAKE THE CORRECT DECISIONS WHEN IT COME TO PROTECTING OUR PLANET.
PLEASE E-MAIL ME ASAP IF THIS IS YOU.
THANK-YOU
