I was thinking the same thing, Katharine. Looks like it got bleached. Still a very beautiful pic though, I love seeing this stuff when I dive.

Please can we go back to the corals?

Doh. You know how every so often you see something in a new way? I've known the term coprolite for ages, but until I saw the "lithen" in German, I never put together that that part of the word was "stone" or "rock." (from Greek?) So it's the same root there as lithograph.

In a nerdly way, this is exciting. :)

What I want to know is who potty-trained the ancient crocodiles?

If you prefer spineless poop, the Eocene Stone City Beds exposed along the banks of the Brazos River near College Station, Texas are loaded with pellets from clams & snails.

tabor: i'd love to show more corals, but i don't think i have any more at the moment. need to go back ... but for every photo you see here, i've snapped at least 10 more than were ruined by the glass on the exhibits. maybe the senckenberg will invite me in to photograph the collections so i can show them to you? i know i'd LOVE to do that!

This is another beautiful coral that I photographed recently at the Senckenberg Naturmuseum. If you were here today, I would unfortunately opt to show you photographs instead of venturing out into the volcanic ash. However, if you were here, you and I would recall the Mt St Helens explosion over cold beers, and we would look at the jar of volcanic ash that I have sitting near me (but of course, we would not open the lid because that stuff is finer than wheat flour and easily blown all over the flat).

If you were here today, I would show you this lovely Ordovician fossil shell. The Ordovician Period began with a series of major extinction events that ended the Cambrian Period roughly 488.3 Â± 1.7 million years ago, and lasted for about 44.6 million years. Despite a world filled with destruction, death and mass extinctions, this little animal managed to live.

That's a weird looking thing. As if it couldn't decide whether to be straight or coiled.

Most Ordo cephalopods are of the straight shell design. That's an early example of 'deviancy' from the up-to-then norm. They would soon evolved a great variety of designs, with the more extreme ones looking like losers in a pasta-design contest.

This is a close look at a large rock standing on the grassy traffic island in front of the Senckenberg Naturmuseum. The grain shows how tortured this rock was when it was still soft.

oh WOW, the Nacht der Museen (Night of Museums) looks like great fun, and the price is excellent! i guess i know what i'll be doing next saturday!

This is a gorgeous fossil shell photographed at the Senckenberg Naturmuseum .. how old is this? What species is this? I don't know .. but I will return and collect more detailed information to share with you (this first visit was a quick pass through the museum to see what they have on display).

If you get a chance go to Solenhofen in Bayern, which is where a lot of the excellent fossils come from. In particular archioptrix fossils come from there. (Being as you are big with birds going to see where their ancestors lived might be interesting) There are museums in both Solenhofen and Eichstadt.

lyle: of COURSE i shall go to both those museums! i would love to go behind the scenes (or behind the glass, as it were) for photography purposes, so am practicing so i will be good by the time i make it there .. hopefully, i will visit soon.

It looks like the inner mold of a large planispiral gastropod. Reminds me of the Ordovician maclurites, but extra-whorly.
