An old friend of mine from a small university town in the UK had dinner with Obama some weeks ago: said Obama was unusually up on a number of issues, in a good, smart way, and asked very good questions, iteratively; also said he was unusual in being polite and considerate of everyone, even the less important people.
He also said Hillary had become a total Obama fanboy...
I am paraphrasing, obviously. Heavily.

Graduate advisors - good and bad
ok, the mood chart is a bit over the top
But, one of the things about recent US privacy issues, like HiPPA and the broader FERPA interpretations, is that advisors can not ask a lot of things about their advisees.
We literally may not ask - it is not that we don't care, sometimes.
This does preclude some past abuses, but it also precludes a lot of current concerns.

The devious slogan for the New York State lottery is "All you need is a dollar and a dream." Such state lotteries are a regressive form of taxation, since the vast majority of lottery consumers are low-income.
