Have you ever seen a bat flying around your house on a summer evening? Did you know that there are 17 different species of bats that live in North Carolina? Come to our breakfast café and learn about these amazing creatures and their biggest threat -- white-nose syndrome, a deadly white fungus that grows around the noses of hibernating bats. Since its discovery in 2007, hundreds of thousands of bats (perhaps a million) have died from the disease, making it one of the worst wildlife disasters ever seen in North America

About the Speaker:

Lisa Gatens is Curator of Mammals at the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences and has worked at the Museum for more than 10 years. She received her BS from West Virginia State College, her MS in Biology from Marshall University, and is currently taking classes at NCSU toward a PhD in Fisheries and Wildlife Science. Her research interests focus on small (non-volant) terrestrial mammals and bats, and she is currently looking at the affects of mercury accumulation in bats. RSVP to katey.ahmann@ncdenr.gov.
