"If you are writing any book about the end of the world, what you are really writing about is what's worth saving about it." -Justin Cronin Well, it's Friday again, and that means it's time to dip into the question/suggestion box, and see what you've come up with for me. This week's Ask Ethan comes from our reader Michael Acosta, who wants to know about the end of the world. Not, mind you, the way the world is actually likely to end, but in a way that would be satisfying to an aspiring science fiction writer. In this wonderful science fiction book I am writing, there is a subplot involving…
"Now, this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning." -Winston Churchill To kick off every week for nearly a year now, we've begun it with Messier Monday, where we take an in-depth look at the 110 deep-sky objects that make up the first elaborate catalogue of fixed night-sky wonders that could possibly be confused for transient comets. Originally, when first published, this catalogue was made up of 103 objects; the final 7 were added posthumously. Each one tells its own unique story, yet all of them tell a sliver of our own story,…
In honor of Maine Lobster month, this video from the American Chemical Society describes why lobsters always turn red when they are cooked, regardless of what color they were prior to being dropped into the stock pot. I don't know about you, but this video has made me crave lobster for dinner tonight! Follow Dr. Dolittle on Twitter: @DrDoScienceBlog
Scientists have discovered just what makes Rudolph's nose turn red:
"I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way -- things I had no words for." -Georgia O'Keeffe When it comes to the Universe, it isn't just the stuff that's in it that's important. Image credit: 2MASS Extended Source Catalog (XSC). It's also how all that stuff interacts with itself and everything else. To the best of our knowledge, there are four fundamental forces in the Universe, and they're all essential to our existence. "Building one space station for everyone was and is insane: we should have built a dozen." -Larry Niven Here on the solid ground of the Earth, the Sun and Moon rise and set on a daily basis. During the hours where the Sun is invisible, blocked by the solid Earth, the stars twirl overhead in the great canopy of the night sky. Image credit: Chris Luckhardt at flickr. In the northern hemisphere, they appear to rotate around the North Star, while in the southern hemisphere, the stars appear to rotate about the South Celestial Pole. The longer you observe -- or for photography, the longer you…
Autumn is a time of incredible beauty, when the world becomes painted in the red, orange and yelllow palette of falling leaves. But there may be a deeper purpose to these colours, and the red ones in particular. In the eyes of some scientists, they aren't just decay made pretty - they are a tree's way of communicating with aphids and other insects that would make a meal of it. The message is simple: "I am strong. Don't try it." During winter, trees withdraw the green chlorophyll from their leaves, and textbooks typically say that autumn colours are produced by the pigments that are left…
Having trouble with a word puzzle? Suffering from writer's block? Perhaps you're not looking at the right colour... We encounter many of the colours in our lives under the same circumstances and as a result, we have come to associate certain colours with specific attributes. Red invokes thoughts of action, danger or mistakes because it is a common feature of warning signs and editorial ink. Blue, however, is a more soothing hue, and its presence in both sky and sea have connected it to peace and openness. These associations aren't trivial ones - they can affect the way we think. In a clever…
Brought to you by Max Cannon, creator of Red Meat and also the dude who helps run the awesome independent Loft Cinema here in Tucson: Hilarious... Also, if you haven't caught it yet, don't forget to check out this week's Carnival of Space, where we have an entry about actually seeing a supernova go off.
I was driving home from work at about 6:30 today and noticed the Moon, still orange, hanging low on the horizon. The lower left corner was just starting to be shadowed by the Earth. As it rose a little higher, it turned yellow and then white, as we learned it should. Then we got clouded out, and right now, during totality, the entire sky is covered in clouds. But I started thinking, "What if I were in space?" Well, the Moon appears red/orange every day during Moonrise/Moonset from Earth, but would appear white from space. But the red/orange during a total eclipse? The Moon would still…
The closest you're going to get from me on Valentine's Day is something red, dear readers. As the Moon is now a waxing gibbous and will be for the next week, it will brighten the sky for the majority of the night. But before sunrise, it will dip below the horizon and set. The funny thing is, if you've ever watched this (or watched a waning gibbous rise), you'll notice it changes color! In fact, this composite photo shows you what I'm talking about: So the Moon, although white once it gets high up into the sky, appears yellow, orange, or even red when it's close to the horizon. I got a…
