It looks good for Kansas

In case you've not heard, several the pro-science candidates for the Kansas Board of Education were victorious in the primary election last night.

If current results hold, it looks like the creationists on the 10-member Kansas Board of Education have lost two seats in the Republican primary. The likelihood is therefore that the new Board of Education will switch from being a 6-4 pro-creationism majority to at least a 6-4 pro-science majority (depending on the November general election). This probably means the pro-ID/creationism science standards are history.

Pat Hayes has much more over at Red State Rabble, while the first link contains Nick Matzke's summary of the past nine months in the state. And while this is a good morning for Kansas Citizens for Science and other pro-science groups in the state and the nation, Pat reminds us:

Moderates must not be fooled into sitting on the laurels in the coming months. We must not allow ourselves to be satisfied by a narrow one-vote majority on the board. We need to go out, raise money and win both elections in November.

The right-wing understands that this is a long-term fight. They didn't give up when they lost the election in 2000, and they won't give up now.

Moderates need to do everything we can to take out Bacon and Willard in November.

We will face another election in just two years when three of the current four-member moderate minority are up for re-election. The radical right will be ready with money and candidates when that day comes.

Tara - Good news indeed. Maybe the victory will spill over into Ohio, our old neck of the woods too.

In other news, your adopted state will have some fun on August 11, when Kevin Costner returns to Field Of Dreams.

My family loves going to Dyersville, and the site looks exactly like the movie. You can play there and have fun, and yes, sit in the bleachers too. Just can't go in the house.

One of the best non-baseball scenes was when Amy Madigan's character kicks the butt of the book-burning - ID-loving- creationist witch at the town meeting. Too bad there is no movie line like "If you Beat ID it will die". Guess we have to play it out every election for as long as we have baseball and America.

Haven't made it to Dyersville yet...maybe this would be a good time to head out there!

This was good to see. In Kentucky, we occaisionaly see somebody push the idea of teaching ID, but it never goes very far. No reason to push our education down any further than we are already. We have to put up with Ken Ham's madness already.
