Emily Yoffe at Slate worries she is a Math Moron, as she takes a Kumon course to stay ahead of her daughter in primary school (via Thorsett).
This is a good article that highlights some of the issues and problems with math education.
It is also quite well written.
This is a widespread problem. The biggest complaint I get about math from parents at my school isn't the quality of the curriculum itself, but the fact that they do not know how to help their kids (from 1st to 6th). I give my parents a handbook that includes all of the relevant vocabulary, a reference book, and the answers to all of the kids homework so that they can at least check for right answers. This cuts down on the complaints, although I don't know if it improves their understanding.
I read the article with some disbelief that a person could graduate from high school and, I presume, from college, without being able to add and subtract. Maybe there really is something in her DNA. Or maybe I just hang out with different kinds of people.
