What a waste!
Looks like that would have been a perfect time to demonstrate how to do a Chi^2 test. Years ago in intro statistics, we actually DID this, except we used M&E&3&W's[1] instead of "Skittels"[sic]. At the time I hadn't realized that M&M/Mars intentionally put different proportions of the colors in the bags, and was disturbingly pleased at being given actual real-world application of a mathematical technique.
[1] - Which one they are depends on their orientation, after all. They're only "M's" if they're facing a certain way...
