Yes, it is supposed to be kept indoors in constant temperature.
Back in the old days when no one was afraid of mercury, I made my own mercury barometer with glass tubing and a full pound of mercury. It worked very well for years (I finally disassembled it when we had a toddler in the house -- more afraid of the hazards of broken glass than of the mercury.).
