Fumento steps on another rake

SayUncle blogged on Fumento's use of sock puppets:

Mike Fumento, who I've talked about before, poked fun at us insignificant blogs before starting his own. He also acted like a prick in an exchange between himself and Rich Hailey.

Now, he's using sockpuppets in comments at other blogs and to change his Wikipedia entry.

Fumento left this comment:

And the reason we know the IP addresses match is . . . because we have Tim Lambert's word on it! And never mind that Lambert has long been on a vendetta against me, nor that he uses his friend over at urinestain.com, er, inkstain.com, to do HIS postings. In other words, he uses a human sock puppet!

Yes, SayUncle has to take my word that the IP addresses match... Or rather, he had to take my word until Fumento posted his comment. Now he can check the IP address of Fumento's comment with that used to edit Wikipedia. Oops.

Tim,

I think it's wonderful that your site includes such humerous tidbits.

Actually, the IP address i got from the comment he left matched the IP address you posted in the wikipedia post. That pretty much removes all doubt in my book.

Tim - I was hoping to post a comment on your blog about all this, but you haven't emailed me telling me what to say. Could you? Also, which IP address should I use to make those Wikipedia edits were were discussing? :-)

Behavior similar to Little Man Syndrome.

Ha! So now Tim Lambert not only lies in support of his vendetta, but he has conspired with SayUncle to lie! We have only the words of Tim Lambert and SayUncle regarding the IP address in question; which can be shown to be no more reliable than the word of Tim Lambert alone, by a process largely similar to the demonstration that there is no such thing as average temperature! And ha again, sir!

Yeah, I, who is more likely to agree with Fumento politically, am merely conspiring with Tim to tarnish his name.

Feh.

Fumento appears to be suffering from narcissistic personality disorder. The Internet Mental Health encyclopedia defines this condition and provides diagnostic criteria:

A pervasive pattern of grandiosity (in fantasy or behavior), need for admiration, and lack of empathy, beginning by early adulthood and present in a variety of contexts, as indicated by five (or more) of the following:

1. has a grandiose sense of self-importance (e.g., exaggerates achievements and talents, expects to be recognized as superior without commensurate achievements)

2. is preoccupied with fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty, or ideal love

3. believes that he or she is "special" and unique and can only be understood by, or should associate with, other special or high-status people (or institutions)

4. requires excessive admiration

5. has a sense of entitlement, i.e., unreasonable expectations of especially favorable treatment or automatic compliance with his or her expectations

6. is interpersonally exploitative, i.e., takes advantage of others to achieve his or her own ends

7. lacks empathy: is unwilling to recognize or identify with the feelings and needs of others
is often envious of others or believes that others are envious of him or her

8. shows arrogant, haughty behaviors or attitudes

Now we are all, more or less, guilty of some of these sins some of the time. But Fumento seems to have most of them in spades. This is particularly evident in his the way he constantly belittles the status of his critics whilst being ceaselessly vigilant in chasing down and tackling even the mildest criticisms.

He cant resist giving the game away when asked to name his favourite web site.

John Hawkins: Are there any web pages you'd like to recommend to our readers?

Michael Fumento: Well, I'm particularly fond of this one called www.fumento.com!

Having just visited www.fumento.com ("factual, powerful, original, iconoclastic"), I think Jack Strocchi is onto something. The lovingly maintained "hatemail" section (41 volumes!), complete with "(sic)"s and put-down responses, is very revealing. A sick puppy?
