Happy Square Root Day!

It has come to my attention that today's date (03-03-09) makes this a Square Root Day.

The Free-Ride household will be marking the occasion pretty much the way you'd expect -- with an evening meal that includes square roots.

Well, approximately square. The roots include diced sweet potatoes (both the canonical orange-fleshed ones and the Japanese white-fleshed ones), carrots, parsnips, turnips, chiogga beets, and potatoes, and sliced leeks.

If you want to get picky and say that the potatoes are not in fact roots so much as tubers, do not expect to be offered seconds.

I've tossed the veggies with some olive oil, salt and pepper, and a mix of spices that includes cumin, coriander, cinnamon, and chili powder. They are currently roasting in a 400 o F oven and they smell wonderful.

If you missed out on this Square Root Day, the next one is in just over 7 years (on April 4, 2016). In the meantime, rumor has it that there is going to be a ScienceBlogs bake-off to celebrate Pi Day (March 14th). Stay tuned.

Your square roots sound delicious. I've used the same spice combination tossed with olive oil on steamed cauliflower, and that works very nicely too, although I'm sure the roasting brings out the fullness of the flavors more.
