William Wehrum is a lawyer and once, apparently, worked for the EPA. Trump is trying to appoint him to be assistant administrator for air and radiation. This is a reasonably important job that concerns many aspects of the environment.

Every year there's a Super Bowl, and every year the whole shebang gets started by a famous person tossing a coin into the air. The team winning the toss gets to decide whether they want to begin the game on offense or defense. Theoretically this choice might produce an advantage.
When either candidate wins a state, that candidate's supporters celebrate and underscore the significance of that win.

One the best votes I ever cast during my decades in Oregon - and I've had the opportunity to cast many votes for many good people and measures - was my vote for Jeff Merkley.
He rocks it.
The USA has been hiding Jeff Merkley under a bushel - I'd never heard of him 'til now.
He's exactly the sort of politiican that your country needs: highly informed, eloquent, focussed on the substantive issues and calling bullshit where he sees it.
Hopefully we'll all see more of him in the future.
I agree completely with Bernard. The fact is that Trump is employing a veritable army of brainless goons to oversee scientific bodies in the United States. The aim should be obvious: to take the baton from the fossil fuel industries to sow doubt on anthropogenic climate change, thereby eviscerating public constraints on corporate activity in the pursuit of private profit. Senator Merkley demolished Wehrum. We urgently need more politicians like him in office.

The very fact that Merkley is being lauded suggests something is

Merkleys performance is not so much good, as Wehrums is absolute crap.

This particular performance isn't why he's widely admired by Oregonians. It is his overall record in his 9 years in the Senate, and his record as Speaker of the House in the Oregon Legislature.
And the fact that no one in Oz has heard of him isn't particularly troubling to your average Oregonian, either. :)
If you all think that things are bad now, just wait till President Pussygrabber packs the Supreme Court and the Federal judgeships with his picks. We're nearly out of checks and balances already.
