I've been lucky enough to get a few halfway-decent photographs of snow leopards during my regular visits to the Bronx zoo, but they're absolute rubbish compared to the photography in the feature "Out of the Shadows" in the latest issue of National Geographic. Indeed, snow leopards are among my favorite felids and the photography by Steven Winter shows them at their best.

I remember being at my local zoo when our resident snow leopard female had about half-grown cubs. The kids were play-attacking each other down below, and mom was relaxing up on some rocks where they couldn't get to her. Suddenly, for whatever reason, she sat up and looked at the cubs, her body language saying as plain as day: "Don't make me come down there and separate you!"
Now, I might be accused of anthropomorphism...except that the cubs settled right down. For about five minutes.
At the St Louis Zoo years ago the tigress had cubs, and one of them jumped out on her head as she came around a bush. She looked SO tired of being a mother just then....
