The skull of a spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta), photographed at the AMNH's "Extreme Mammals" exhibit.

The only (cleaned) mammalian skull I have in my home collection is an (American) badger: fairly big and robust for a mustelid. Just looking at this, the hyena seems to be of a MUCH more robust construction. Anyone would think, looking at it, that it was "designed" for heavy duty, high stress, work! What do these animals do with their jaws? Crush bones? (Grin!)

Thanks for posting this: the more skulls I look at, the more of a "feel" I get for their construction.
