The Field Museum curator of mammals, Bruce Patterson, has recently returned from his field work in Tsavo, Kenya, and he has posted some of his excellent photography in a Kodak gallery. The shots are absolutely breathtaking; they almost make me want to sell all my stuff and take off for Kenya. [Update: You can see more photos from previous trips here.] As outlined on his biographical webpage, Patterson runs a number of projects, but lions are his focus at Tsavo. Made famous (infamous?) by the thriller The Ghost and the Darkness a few years back, there's actually much more to learn about the…

It has been about a week since my wife and I caught one of the feral kittens in the yard (named Owen), and he has been showing quite a bit of progress. Our cat Charlotte absolutely loves him, and here she is giving him a bath; We also managed to catch Owen's brother, another orange kitten we've named Cope, who is also starting to relax a little. We're going to try to catch the two female kittens that are still out there, but if we can't do it this week the window for us being able to catch them and socialize them is probably going to be closed.

For some damn-fool reason I decided to reorganize the living room the other day, a project that (two days later) is still not fully completed. Moving the furniture wasn't the problem; it was finding a home for the ever-growing library that threatens to overtake the entire apartment. I only have to clean up a little bit now, but it was the sort of project that needs to be done all the way or not at all. On top of that, there are two new kittens that need some special attention. One foster kitten, Gia, I expected to have, but the other, Owen, I did not. (My wife named him after the anatomist…

I had been meaning to post these pictures for a while, but I kept forgetting until now. Both are of Huxley, who was the first "foster cat" of the summer and found a good home;
