One of the great things about Coturnix is that he brings two context-broadening tools to the table in any discussion: Synchronic and diachronic. Various environmental organizations have been using imagery of dead baby birds with toothbrushes in their guts and solid floating masses of garbage to describe and raise alarm about what has become known as the North Pacific Central Garbage Patch. For a very long time, I have argued that many scientists are excellent communicators. I have seen a number of scientists talk over the years and the experience has been mostly very positive. Last night, braving horrible traffic on the way there, and snow on the way back, I made my way to the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences for the Darwin Day shark lecture co-organized by NESCent and the sneak preview of the Megalodon exhibit which officially opens today. I have to say that the trip was very much worth making - the exhibit is excellent! The journal Environmental Health Perspectives leads off its December issue with a news feature on the relevance of framing research to science communication. For readers who have followed recent review articles at Nature Biotechnology and the American Journal of Botany, the news feature adds additional insights. EHP is a monthly journal of peer-reviewed research and news on the impact of the environment on human health.
