This year's August Krogh Distinguished lecture, the highest award given to an accomplished Comparative Physiologist from the Comparative and Evolutionary Physiology section of the American Physiological Society was awarded to Dr. Jon Harrison, Arizona State University. The basic idea of the student response system is that each student gets some electronical (or not - see below) device that lets them answer multiple-choice questions. (Science Geek Girl has a good summary of clickers also) A computer then displays the distribution of responses for the class. Simple, no? They are becoming super popular, and I really like them. I re-watched Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix last night and my wife and I noticed something about teaching. Of course I mentioned that this would make a good blog post (and she may still post it on her blog, but I can't help myself). So I gave a public lecture last (Monday) night called, "Afraid of the Dark: How We Know What We Can't See" and videotaped it. Now, I'm pretty good at what I'm doing right now (research in theoretical cosmology), but I'm really good at public speaking and teaching, and here is me telling a public audience all about dark matter, how we know it exists, what makes it different from normal matter, and what I'm trying to do to find it/discover its nature for a good 40 minutes.
