tags: Starry Night, horse tile artwork, street art, NYC through my eye, photography, NYC This is another of the American Museum of Natural History's horse artworks. This piece is located at the 81st and Columbus street entrance to the museum grounds. Starry Night, left side. Artist: Geri Bowden. Image: GrrlScientist 2008 [larger view]. This horse's colors and patterning was no doubt inspired by Vincent van Gogh's masterpiece, The Starry Night (Dutch: De sterrennacht), which is one of my favorite paintings. The original painting can be viewed at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) located…
tags: nocturnal landscape, horse artwork, street art, NYC through my eye, photography, NYC A week or two ago, the American Museum of Natural History added some horse artworks to its grounds. This is one of those horses. Nocturnal Landscape, right side. Artist: Heather L. Martin. Image: GrrlScientist 2008 [larger view]. This lovely horse artwork stands on the sidewalk on the western side of the American Museum of Natural History and is apparently part of the museum's special exhibit, "The Horse". I like this side better, but unfortunately, the light does not show the colors and patterns…

The photographer, Bob Levy, writes; This image captures a group of unfortunate Central Park turtles sorely in need of a yoga master. The chaos, as the Great Oz once said is," The result of disorganized thinking." Finding such a chaotic demonstration of yoga art shocked this observer who has grown used to watching turtles execute poses with precision and grace. Will a yoga master arise to lead the others and bring order to the class and the universe or at…
tags: NYCLife, Manhattan street fair, NYC through my eye, photography, NYC There are so many reasons to love NYC, and surely, the best reason is the street fairs that occur all over Manhattan during the summer. Street fair "season" in NYC runs between Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend. Street fairs occupy huge stretches of the surface streets in Manhattan on either a Saturday or Sunday between the hours of 9am and 6pm. This street fair, for example, occupies the downtown-bound lanes of Broadway between West 72nd and West 86th streets. Every weekend and holiday day has at least one…
tags: northern cardinals, Cardinalis cardinalis, birds, Central Park, Image of the Day You do not have to be a photography expert to notice that the only thing in focus in this image is the green mesh in the foreground and even then you might have to enlarge it to see that it is so. To appreciate why I relish this photo a detailed explanation is necessary. Of course that might be said about many of my other images too but none more so than this one: at least so far. Image: Bob Levy, author of Club George [larger]. The photographer, Bob Levy, writes; You will, I hope, recognize that there…

This image appears here, courtesy of Bob Levy, who writes; A Central Park Raccoon known to her admirers as Raquel has been thought to have recently given birth to cubs in her Locust Grove den. At least that is what the scant observable evidence suggested to this reporter. My conclusion turned out to be 100% accurate. Or should I say 200% accurate since I saw two cubs inside the den. Her lair may have a posh…

I am not proud of this image because it is blurry, but because I snapped it while recovering from a broken shoulder, I guess I shouldn't expect much. I plan to return to retake this image so it is clearer. If I have managed to do this, you will not even be reading this message! Image: GrrlScientist 2008 [larger view].
tags: Field Guide to the Natural World of New York City, nature, field guide, NYC, Leslie Day, Mark Klingler, book review What do you think of when you heard the words, "New York City"? Money? Skyscrapers? Broadway plays? Restaurants? Millions of people living in tiny apartments? Fire hydrants spurting water on hot muggy days? Rotting garbage on the sidewalks? How about birds: do any of you think of birds and other wildlife? Most people don't. Many people, especially visitors, are unaware of the wealth of green spaces and parks in NYC, along with their resident and migratory wildlife. However…

Image: Bob Levy, author of Club George [larger]. Bob Levy writes; I believe there have been three successive male Red-winged Blackbirds holding the territory on the western half of Turtle Pond in Central Park since the main protagonist of my book Club George reigned there. I have given these males names. I call this one Gerry but the name "George" has become a kind of honorary title at the pond where visitors routinely call…

Bob Levy writes: It's a little known fact but an incontrovertible one. Having had the opportunity to closely study the Central Park Raccoon population it did not take me long to discover that it is common for them to greatly exaggerate their exploits and accomplishments. In this image I was able to capture one typical example. Tsk, tsk. What a fibber. I was there. It was half that size.
