Hello! I'm a student of Dr. Myers here at the lovely University of Minnesota Morris and will be blogging weekly for the next few months about whatever I find or dream up that relates to Neurobiology. This week I suppose the most interesting finding I have comes from 89.3 "The Current," an off-branch of the popular MPR radio station. There is a program called "Radio Lab," in which a couple show hosts review scientific work done in broad categories while they converse and explore the work of scientists who actually did the research. One of the categories for the week was on sleep; why do we…
It's Friday! I have no classes today, so this is the day where I desperately struggle to catch up with the backlog; it also happens to be the day we're hosting a party at our house (you're invited: 5:30, my place, across the street from the university; everyone who is anyone will be there). If you can't make it, I expect you to make small talk and chat sociably in this open thread. Here are a few ice-breakers to help you get started. I'm in the Middle Ages, where we don't have computers, and it's a real pain to have to hire a wizard to send these messages to the internet. You'll have to talk amongst yourselves and peruse these fascinating carnivals without me. I and the Bird #56 Carnival of Education #133 Friday Ark #153 The next Tangled Bank will be at Balancing Life on Wednesday. Send those links in to me or host@tangledbank.net. The list of future hosts is also shrinking, so if you have a blog and think you'd be interested in hosting, volunteer!
I'm home at last, after a long flight and a long drive through more thunderstorms, and boy am I tired. Not from the flying and driving, but from being the old geezer amongst the youngsters at that recent meeting, and trying to keep up with them. Did you know those whippersnappers stay up to all hours of the night, drinking and dancing and sinning, and they don't take naps, even? OK, while I try to restore my disturbed equilibrium and restart my poor overtaxed brain, here are a few things you can read elsewhere. Humanist Symposium #6 Friday Ark #152 Grand Rounds 3:47 Carnival of the…
The next edition of the Tangled Bank will be at Fish Feet on Wednesday, 15 August. Send those links in to me or host@tangledbank.net. Until Wednesday, you'll need to make do with these other carnivals, or engage in undirected and unspecified web-based social intercourse in the comment thread below. Must catch up on neglected linkage. Must take nap. Everyone is on their own for a little while as I try to get my brain out of its fog. I'm too old to skip an entire night's worth of sleep. Friday Ark #150 Mendel's Garden #17 Skeptics' Circle #66 Carnival of the Blue III I and the Bird #54

Gee, people seem to have slowed in sending me announcements, or it's a slow summer week, but I only have two carnivals to report: I and the Bird #53 (it's their second anniversary!) and Friday Ark #147. I can also say that next week is time for the Tangled Bank, to be held at The Voltage Gate on 18 July. Send links to me or host@tangledbank.net. Go below the fold to comment on anything you want, or to see the recent collection of cephalart (it's also been a while since I ran one of those.)

No, don't hate me…but it's more carnivals. I'm catching up on all this stuff that was sent to me. Besides, it's a holiday weekend, right? You're going to be out there on the deck, tending the BBQ, with your laptop at hand for wireless browsing between the burger flipping, anyway, just like me. So sure, here's lots more reading. Here's a slew of good stuff to entertain you on a pleasant Friday, the last day of finals week here at UMM. I have to give my genetics students their final exam in a short while—I fear they are not having a happy time right now. When they're done, though, the sun will be shining, commencement awaits tomorrow … and I will be sitting in gloomy room somewhere, red pen in hand, grading.
