Presidential wannabe McCain took a swing at the White House and the leadership of NOAA:
"They're simply not complying with the law. It's incredible."
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) raised eyebrows yesterday with that comment regarding the Bush administration, made before a crowd of several hundred at a Washington, D.C. event.
At issue is a report on climate change that Congress requires every ten years. The National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which is responsible for producing the document, last filed a report in 2000. A new report -- the first to be filed by the Bush administration -- was due in November 2004, but to date the agency has not done so.
"When you get to that degree of obfuscation, then you get a little depressed," McCain said.
My theory is that the White House has decided to be so egregiously outrageous on every possible issue that the public will just get used to it, and Congress will either wear itself out trying to keep up, or will give the administration a pass on all but the lowest hanging fruit.
It'll be a long two years until 2008.
And before you start thinking McCain is a hero, remember what I've said about him before, and I'm sure I'll say it again: "Like all great indie acts, his early work was better."
Personally, I think we've had quite enough of anyone's "brand of conservative... politics and hawkish foreign policy."

I made up my mind about McCain when I got an automated call from him shortly before the election asking that I vote for our state's "Defense of Marriage" (otherwise known as the "Deprive Gay People of Equal Legal Rights") amendment.
Now that the keepers have regained control of the zoo, we may soon see some checking and balancing, and some holding accountable.
