Best Science Books 2010: Toronto Star / Public Policy Forum

Another list for your reading, gift giving and collection development pleasure. This list is the Holiday Reading list from the Toronto Star Public Policy Forum, picked from individual lists in today's print newspaper. Bizarrely, I wasn't able to find the list online.

  • Where Good Ideas Come From: The Natural History of Innovation by Steven Johnson
  • Unquenchable: America's Water Crisis and What To Do About It by Robert Glennon
  • The Grand Design by Stephen Hawking and Leonard Mlodinow
  • Carbon Shift: How Peak Oil and the Climate Crisis Will Change Canada (and Our Lives) by Thomas Homer-Dixon

I'm always looking for recommendations and notifications of book lists as they appear in various media outlets. If you see one that I haven't covered, please let me know at jdupuis at yorku dot ca or in the comments.

I am picking up a lot of lists from Largehearted Boy.

Earlier entries in this year's list of lists can be found here and the 2009 summary post here.

I wasn't really sure of quite how to start this off. I finally decided to just dive right in with a simple function definition, and then give you a bit of a tour of how Haskell works by showing the different ways of implementing it.
Along with tacky an inescapable Christmas music, December brings lists, as every publication that deals with music at all puts out their own compilation of songs or albums of the year.
Humans readily establish false memories. If you give adults a study list of words like hot, snow, warm, winter, ice, wet, chilly, weather, heat, freeze, shiver, frost, and then test them later, they will "remember" related words like cold that weren't actually on the list.
Continuing on a theme, physicians can be really clueless sometimes; case in point, what happened at my medical school a couple of days ago.

Thanks for posting the list. During the Christmas time, favourite book lists are all I am looking for, since it is always better to hear that at least someone actually enjoyed the book that you are planning to get for your loved one :-) from this list, I have only read The Grand Design so far and it was a pleasure.
