Ladderback Woodpecker

I am now sure this is a ladderback.  The photos are not very
sharp, having been taken through a window screen, but it still was fun.

The cat was going nuts.  That's how I knew there was something
outside.

More like this

I've seen many ladderbacks in the Ozarks but until this morning I had never seen one in my home area which is the western side of the Oklahoma City Metro. This ladderback was at my feeder!!! This feeder is very close to my bay window and I spent many moments observing this delightful woodpecker. This area is very much out of the range due to flat, less trees and very hot temps and hard, hot winds from Spring through late Fall! We also build with brick and our facias and trim is not as much wood as it is insulated vinyl type siding. It doesn't leave many places for a woodpecker to "drill".
I have a resident little Downy that loves my suet cakes and will fight bigger birds for his share....but seeing the big Ladderback was a very special treat.
