I've had some requests for some more molecular puzzles since the last one that I posted (see A DNA puzzle ). One person liked it so much he even blogged about it.
So, here's one for you to chew on over the weekend.
This puzzle is a variation of an activity in Exploring DNA Structure, a CD/lab book that I made (with funding from the NSF) and used for some educational research.

Ethidium is a dye that's used in molecular biology to allow DNA to be visualized. Regular DNA isn't colored; it absorbs ultraviolet but not visible light, so you need to use tricks like making the DNA radioactive (which makes it pretty easy to spot), or using dyes that selectively bind to DNA.
I'm going to hazard a guess and posit that it is A-DNA. B-DNA has a central axis of H-bonding and Z-DNA is left-handed, and has nucleotides spaced farther apart.
I am not, however, going to posit that my hazarded guess completely correct.
Is that an oxygen I see attached to the 2' carbons on the right hand strand?
Kind of looks to me like RNA hybridized to DNA.
Interesting guesses.
