Reasons for Not Vaccinating Adolescents: National Immunization Survey of Teens, 2008-2010
Our findings across 3 years show that, even as clinicians are increasingly recommending HPV, increasing numbers of parents, >40% in 2010, do not intend to vaccinate their adolescent female children with this vaccine. Parents intending to refuse are increasingly concerned about vaccine safety and seem less willing to accept clinician recommendations.
Yeah, what do us stupid virologists and immunologists and physicians know. Better just let your kid get a preventable disease that can cause a deadly cancer cause some idiot on the internet told you vaccines are made of Satans spooge.

This kind of stuff literally makes me sick to my stomach.
I don't understand how human logic can be so broken. I'm convinced "logic and reasoning" should be a required course to get a high school diploma and/or GED.

I'm thinking of getting vaccinated, but there are some things I don't know about it. Like how long is the vaccination good for? Because some need to get reminders from time to time. I also don't know a lot about HPV, so I'm wondering if you can only get it through sex, or other ways as well. Only wondering because I live an asexual life.
I do not think this is the parent's fault but rather is the fault of the broken system. Parents cannot rely on what the physician says because the physician relys on what they read in the media, the peer-reviewed literature, etc. The previous might seem kind of a duh statement, but it's no secret that the peer-reviewed literature itself is broken due to the amount of secrecy/non-transparency, collusion, corruption, incompetance, negligance, publication bias, etc. which has undermined the legitimacy of a significant proportion of the entire endeavour.
If you want things like the subject of this article to become a thing of the past, it's going to take what all the various groups are and have been recommending for quite some time re: releasing raw data from studies alongside publication, registering all trials and all the other various reforms which are desperately needed.
I think to the general public, 'science' is just kind of a monolithic entity even though 'science' as a whole is broken up into many constituant parts. If one or more parts is viewed as corrupt then the entire endeavour suffers as a result.
I am very grateful to be Australian when I read stories like this. The HPV vaccine is now part of our government funded free vaccination program run through schools. Extremely high take up rates. And, like rubella vaccinations, it's been extended to males.
I think it's a bit unfair to say that parents don't care if their daughter dies. Parents who are afraid of vaccines are usually DESPERATELY frightened that their daughters might die...their fear is just misplaced in the majority of cases. At any rate, let's be fair about what they care about and not misidentify their motivations.
Here I sit in a small medical office with my middle-aged sister who is about to receive radiation- and chemo-therapy for a stage IV lymphoid cancer that tests positive for HPV. I wish we had the vaccine years ago, say in the last century.
