with a little thingie over the 'i' ... which I won't attempt in Movabletype.

George Lemaitre was the priest and scientist who proposed the BIg Bang (though it was not called that then) theory. By the way, for those of you now interested in this discussion of removing the phrase "Darwinism" from our vocabulary, you may find it interesting that "The Big Bang" was originally a non-complementary term used to describe this theory, by its detractors.
Lemaitre prenumberated Hubble's Law, and applied General Relativity to the Universe. He also did important theoretical work work with the atom.

One of the nice things about being a Big Shot science blogger is that sometimes people are willing to send you free copies of their books.

It is with great sadness I report the passing away of one of the world's greatest carcinologists, L.B. Holthuis. A carcinologist studies crustaceans and he contributed to the knowledge of many diverse types of crustaceans. A little about him from a Wikipedia entry:
Hey, that « little thingie » is actually my nickname, and I hereby confirm that those work well in ScienceBlogs ;-)
It is funny that the first rejection of the Big Bang was actually done because it was too theistic (its discovery by a priest is probably linked to this) and even a bit creationist-like. Now those who reject it (in Internet fora, at least; there might also be a handful serious guys, elsewhere) do it because it is not enough creationist.
Interesting photo. You might find this interview with Eric Lerner (The Big Bang Never Happened) confirms your thoughts and adds to them.

I don't have any thoughts about the big bang.
