This is my last post at Scienceblogs.com. In the future I will be blogging at Greg Laden's blog, located at its original home at gregladen.com. I have a feeling that Scienceblogs will not last long without me. What do you think? :) But seriously, I'll be talking about the story of the current…
Hacking Voting Machines
October 10, 2017
In every area of life, but especially in the overlapping realms of technology, science, and health, misunderstanding how things work can be widespread, and that misunderstanding can lead to problems. In the area of voting, the main problem seems to be the expenditure of great amounts of outrage and…
On that chilling law suit against the environmental groups
October 5, 2017
... which I've posted on before ... there are new developments, summarized at Inside Climate News: Invoking the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act, or RICO, a federal conspiracy law devised to ensnare mobsters, the suit accuses the organizations, as well as several green campaigners…

The Great March Storm of 2017 (updated)
The Key for the above graphic: Donald Trump's FEMA is not ready for this storm. The entire federal government is understaffed, and there are funding problems, and this applies to FEMA as well. So, if you are anywhere in the area to be affected by this storm (the weather channel calls it Stella, I call it Trump's Storm One because it is the first big storm on his watch) you need to know that the…
Atlantic Tropical Weather Update (Updated)
So, how has the Atlantic hurricane season shaping up so far? According to data accumulated by the National Weather Service, as shown (with added items) here ... ... we should have had about four or five named storms at this point in the season. Since numbers for this time of year are small, variation is large, so this is not too meaningful but it can give us an idea. So far, we have had these…
Giant Semiaquatic Predatory Dinosaur
It is called Spinosaurus aegyptiacus but it sounds a bit more like Godzilla. Spinosaurus is a theropod dinosaur (that's the groups birds evolved within) found in what is now NOrth Africa, between about 112 and 97 million years ago. It was first discovered about one century ago, though those bones were destroyed during WW II. Spinosaurus aegyptiacus might be the only species of this genus, or…
