I can't help but think, in a dorm environment, that the natural enemy of such a structure would be... a bowling ball, or perhaps a frozen turkey. In slow motion, rather than time-lapse photography.

Or one of those large wooden cable spools that workmen carelessly leave lying around.
Not that I would know anything about the dramatic splintery demise of such large wooden spools, following late-night hallway spool races and an unfortunate turn over a railing and down the center of a 5-story stairwell. No YouTube in those days, fortunately.
