I think this is a species of pangolin, Manis species,
as portrayed in tiles on the walls of the NYC uptown subway stop (A-B-C)
at 81st and Central Park West. (ISO, no zoom, no flash).

Who DID all these? Were they commissioned? I lived in Manhattan for many years when I was young (1950-1964) and don't recall these at all.
Yep, pangolin! There are at least 7 extant species of these, though.
