AMNH Subway Art #52

tags: , , , , ,

This beastie is probably a silverfish, Lepisma saccharina,
as portrayed in tiles on the stairway of the NYC subway stop (A-B-C)
at 81st and Central Park West. (ISO, no zoom, no flash).

aaron: that's a much better guess than mine, since i don't think it looks much like an amoeba, but .. i couldn't think of what else it could possibly be.

Could it be a copepod?

Nope. That's GOTTA be a silverfish.

Our offices are crawling with them (literally) -- believe me, I'm pretty familiar with what they look like! --Actually, I think they're kind of cool looking. I wouldn't mind them at all, if it weren't for the fact they eat paper.

IIRC, silverfish are "living fossils" -- sole survivors of a very old lineage. Coincidentally, they've just shown up in the webcomic Skin Horse.
