Darwin was not a failed student. He graduated from Cambridge in 1831 ranking in the top 10% of his class. The M.A. after his name is quite legitimate.

An MA from Cambridge is not a merit-based degree, but is awarded automatically 2 years after graduating with a bachelors degree provided you don't die or go to jail in the meanwhile. 'MPhil' is what they call masters degrees that you actually earn.
