I really like the coloring of this particular cultivar, possibly because it closely resembles its wild ancestors (although its giant size dwarfs its wild ancestors). I also think the blue/purple veins on the middle petals (upper yellow colored petals) make an interesting contrast to the reddish-brown veins on the bottom petals (lower yellow colored petals). I find it interesting: what developmental variations in the flower petals gave rise to this color difference?

OK, here's my idea: We put a leash on Emmy and we put her up on top of this rock that's on top of all these other rocks. Then she jumps down into these petals. so she'll be safe. And you pull on the leash so she jumps down a little faster.

comments like #1's ruin the beauty of an innocent photo.

Was comment #1 even intended for this post?
I've been seeing bizarre mixups of comments and posts all over scienceblogs for the past couple of days.

wow, what a rude comment! i deleted comment number one because it was worse than the usual nonsense that is posted here. if the original author can explain the reason he posted his bird droppings on this particular blog entry, i'll reconsider my draconian reaction (deleting his comment).

sorry, everyone.

dave -- since the World Science Fest appears to be a 2004 & 2005 event based on the link you left here, and it is 2009 as i write this, it is unlikely i will attend, unless you've got some drugs that allow me to time-travel. in which case, please share so i can attend!

Wow. I couldn't figure out why people hated Dave's innocent question so much! Now I realize his wasn't the original #1...

I confess that I prefer purple and white pansies, but this one is attractive.
