Michael Tobis is always worth reading, but he has a particularily well done essay up on Gristmill about some of the deeper implications and causes of the current global food crisis. Visit his post about it here, and after bookmarking his site, click through to the Gristmill article he has linked. I think he dismisses too much the importance of biofuel demand in the current equation, but that is a minor disagreement. He correctly identifies the real problem as one of food distribution being governed by financial mechanisms only, and the lamentable lack of any other metric aside from ability…
From DemocracyNow!, specifcally this story, we get the charmingly humble statement from Justice Antonin Scalia I used as this post's title. What is his view? Torture is not punishment so it is not actually prohibited by the US constitution's eigth ammendment, forbidding the infliction of "cruel and unusual punishment". It is fascinating and alarming to see the intellectual gymnastics amoral people go through to deny plain and simple reality. Watch the clip here (requires RealPlayer) or go to Democracy Now's April 29th broadcast, around minute 12. And by the way, the answer to his question "…
So most of us have probably seen them before, animations of flight patterns spreading across North America and the globe, but I thought this one was particularily satisfying in its production: Try not to think of all the carbon emissions associated with all that flying!

So, why do we want genetically modified crops? I thought it was supposed to be part of a new Green Revolution. Apparently not... Via CommonDreams, it seems that another major study has found that GM crops are actually worse in terms of total production than conventional crops. So, besides ensuring global dependence on patented genomes, special pesticides and corporations like Monsanto...what is the point? (What's that? That is the point...? I'm so naive) [--original article from the Independent here--]

One of the favories squeals of the climate change denialists is that proponents of action to slow the current global warming are "alarmists", exagerating threats and mongering fear to push past rational debate. I have always found this a bit ironic considering the economic doomsday that they asure us will arise if we dare burn one drop of gasoline less than our slightest whims would require. So this piece from a usually far left blog is especially amusing, and also demonstrates another fundamental law of The Blogosphere: a wingnut is a wingnut, whether you twist to the right or twist to the…

I know I am a bit late on this one, but CBC Radio's "Quirks and Quarks" had a very interesting segment on geothermal energy February 2. You can listen to the segment directly here. The page for that day's show is here, where you can read the following teaser and find links to related material: We're familiar with geothermal energy from mountain hot springs, geysers like Old Faithful in Yellowstone Park, and perhaps from the way Iceland has developed an entire energy system based on volcanic-heated water. However, geothermal energy is still just a niche player in the global energy picture.…
