Drum roll please...
We are now officially able to announce that Andrew Binder, a graduate student in life sciences communication at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has won our "Crash the Intersection" banner contest.
Andrew's successful banner--which I've taken to calling the Sign & Cross-Genes--can be viewed at the top of the page, or here. You'll notice that we're still having technical difficulties in putting it up, though these should soon subside. Meanwhile, Andrew's various promised goodies are wending their way to Madison. (Cool town, by the way.)
We will display the banner for at least one year, although honestly at the end of that year I can see us not wanting to change...
In closing I can't help noticing that Andrew is a classic "Intersection" type--a thinker after our own hearts here. His research description:
Andrew R. Binder's primary research interest lies in public perceptions of controversial science issues and how they influence subsequent behaviors and attitudes, especially concerning public policy and politics. His master's thesis will explore the effects of mass communication and interpersonal discussion on public concern for global warming. Other interests include the social amplification of risk and dimensions of fear of science. Prior to enrolling in the Life Sciences Communication graduate program, he taught English as a second language and educated students about HIV/AIDS in eastern Cameroon as a Peace Corps volunteer.
Don't tell PZ, but Andrew recently presented a paper with the word "frames" in the title!

Kudos to Andrew.
I've been following his research at the University of Wisconsin with my colleagues Dietram Scheufele and Dominique Brossard. I am looking forward to him adding his research to what we know about engaging the public on areas of science. Plus it helps that he cites me a lot! ;-)

The banner is all good, but when I first saw the title of this post I though it said, "Sign of the Cross Genes."
You have to copy the code to your individual archive pages guys, it only shows up on the front page.
