Too Little, Too Late

From The Independent:

In an interview with al-Jazeera, Alberto Fernandez, director of public diplomacy in the Bureau of Near Eastern Affairs at the US State Department, also said the US was ready to talk with any Iraqi group - excluding al- Qa'ida in Iraq - to reach national reconciliation in the country, which is racked by widening sectarian strife as well as an enduring insurgency.

"We tried to do our best but I think there is much room for criticism because, undoubtedly, there was arrogance and there was stupidity from the United States in Iraq," he said. "We are open to dialogue because we all know that, at the end of the day, the hell and the killings in Iraq are linked to an effective Iraqi national reconciliation," he said, speaking in Arabic.

Misktakes were made? If the CPA constitutes doing your best, then it's a miracle you didn't forget how to breathe. This fiasco wasn't only predictable, it was predicted. Bring them home now.

More like this

Tim Blair continues to insist that the election was about Iraq. I'll look at his arguments in a moment, but first let's look at what everybody else says about this.
Vice President Dick Cheney repeated his assertion today that al-Qaeda had links to Iraq despite the fact that the US Defense Department recently released a report citing more evidence that the Iraq's prewar government did not cooperate with the terrorist group.
Back before the Iraq War invasion there was some talk about the human and cultural capital of the nation. That it was the Germany of the Middle East. That it was in a good position to benefit from liberation.

What's as good as this is the immediate reaction from the State Department: "He was misquoted. He didn't say that."

Then various Arabic speakers at places like the BBC got to say, "Oh, yes, he did."

Amazing that these people have not yet figured out that if they say it on film, the film is out there. Of course, until very recently, the only person who ever called them on it was Jon Stewart, so maybe it's understandable.
