This is one of a large group of wild rose flowers that were blooming outside the front door of the cafe. The scent they produced was unbelievably strong and sweet and -- dare I say it? -- otherworldly.

Ah, the breakfast of champions: licorice and chocolate. Well, and coffee (not pictured, but you get the idea).
My host finally awoke (I had been awake for hours, watching birds, playing on my laptop, and torturing the cat) and he gave me a meal consisting of licorice, chocolate and coffee. Dessert was a bowl of yogurt topped with muesli. A perfect way to start the day in beautiful Helsinki.

Here's a look at the floating wooden bridge that I walked across on my way to visit the Tarvaspää Café at the Gallen-Kallela Museum near Tarvon Salmi in Helsinki, Finland. I saw a pair of Great crested Grebes and their half-grown chicks on this body of water -- a new species addition to my life list!

I am sure I must have looked like I was insane when, walking down the sidewalk, I spied this bumblebee sitting on the concrete. I plopped myself down onto my hands and knees on the sidewalk and spent a few minutes nose-to-nose with her, trying to figure out if she was dying because she was hurt or old (or maybe she was just resting?). She looked to be in good repair, so I got her onto my hand to photograph her. It's not…
