London, England

Hey, do you all know what day today is? Today is one month before I will be standing in London England. That's right, one month from this very moment, after having spent the previous night on a redeye from NYC, I will be hanging around with my NATURE blog colleagues and exploring London pubs with a science-y theme (we could still use some pub suggestions!) [Click the icon above to learn more and to register online to attend the conference free!] I am very excited. In fact, I am so excited, I could scream! I am already working on plans for things to see and do [tentative schedule],…
Sara, one of my good friends at YellowIbis science t-shirts, sent me some ScienceWear for my London visit! By the way, don't you just love their company name? Anyway, I had to show you the t-shirt I asked for because it's so .. science-y! How can you resist such a wonderful shirt? (Yes, I know, Saint Paddy's Day is long gone, but I am preparing early for next year). I also got two cotton totes (with different designs, one design is pictured above) to carry groceries, so I no longer am faced with the familiar "paper or plastic?" dilemma! Not only that, but I am bringing one tote to London…
I just had to let you know a few details about my London visit. First, my renewed passport arrived in snailmail, with no problems at all! The new passport is quite fancy, by the way, with all sorts of aphorisms about democracy and how wonderful it is printed at the top of each page. Too bad they didn't include anything about the lack of health insurance, the housing crisis and the absolutely crappy employment situation for people with "too much education". So here's the plan so far: I arrive at Heathrow at 730 am on the 28th of August and depart in the afternoon on the 7th of September.…
I DID IT! I made reservations for a hostel in London in the W1 post code (I hope it is not a high crime area) and the total cost for 10 nights is $288.16 (£146.00) and my roundtrip airfare is $700 on Air India. My goal is to write essays and add images to my blog while I am there, so I hope that you Londoners add your favorite free wifi location to the map so I can use them when I am there!
I was offered a free Darwin shirt by the good people at CafePress because they were certain that I'd like it so much that I'd mention it on my blog. Well, they were right about that! I love my shirt and I love it even more because it arrived in time for me to wear when I visit London! They were kind enough to also send a very clever Darwin sweatshirt. This sweat shirt is a size "G" (for giant? I actually asked for a large, but, oh well) which means that I can share it with someone special and we both can stay warm! If you were curious about the quality of these items, I can tell you not to…
Image: Orphaned. Already, I know which airline I plan to avoid for my flight across the pond to London: US Air. I just learned that, as of 1 August, US Air is instituting a $2 charge for all drinks on all domestic flights -- another way to nickle and dime their passengers to death, apparently. No, this won't affect me because I will be traveling on an international flight and no, I am not talking about alcoholic beverages, which already cost $7 or more, I am talking about non-alcoholic beverages; juices, soda, coffee and bottled water! Worse, since we cannot carry liquids through security…
I have more news about the European Science Blogging Conference in London, England. First, we have an official logo (see left)! Second, I just learned that I will be a panelist with two Nature Network Science Blog writers! We will be discussing a topic that is near and dear to my heart; Science, Blogging and the Public. To do a good job as a panelist, I have some questions that I plan to ask you over the next week or so, and I will use your responses to write about those topics and seek more responses from you after I do that so I can refine my knowledge for this panel. The first question;…
London at Night (Astronomy Picture of the Day). Image: ISS Crew, Earth Sciences and Image Analysis Lab, JSC, NASA [larger view]. Even though I've been quiet about my London trip for the upcoming European science blogging conference, I have been working on arrangements behind the scenes. This is what I've decided so far; It took me awhile to realize that, before I make a reservation for a roundtrip flight, I need to know how long I can afford to stay in London. So of course, I am trying to find the least expensive (most affordable) accomodations possible. Not only that, but because I am…
tags: Professor Steve Steve World-famous evolutionary biologist, Professor Steve Steve, supervises a blog writer. Image: Not sure who snapped it [larger view]. . Those are not my hands, nor my laptop, but that picture gives you the general idea of what to expect when I visit London at the end of August because I have made arrangements for Professor Steve Steve to accompany me! How exciting! I only met Steve Steve for the first time last year at the SciBling meeting in NYC, but I've never traveled with him before. Amazingly, Professor Steve Steve is doing what I've only dreamed of doing…
Okay, everyone, I am getting some wonderful suggestions in email for what to see and do in London in August, so I have decided to start a thread where you all can suggest things for a person who lives (and travels) on a shoestring. I already have gotten some suggestions from birders (they are such a great group of people) that I will share with you to start things off; David Lindo at The Urban Birder is one source I'll be contacting for more information and I'll be purchasing Where to Watch Birds in the London Area by Dominic Mitchell. Besides birding, I plan to see as much of London as…
London at Night (Astronomy Picture of the Day). Image: ISS Crew, Earth Sciences and Image Analysis Lab, JSC, NASA [larger view]. Ever since I first heard about it, I have been wishing wishing wishing that I could -- somehow -- attend Nature Network's Euro ScienceBlogging Conference in London, England on 30 August. In fact, I have wanted to relocate to the UK (or elsewhere overseas) for much of my life, but alas, that's another dream unrealized, sigh. So of course, I thought my latest desire to visit London and attend this conference would suffer the same fate as the dodo. But, I was…
