Open Thread

Once again, the overflowing thread must spill over into a new vessel. Speak amongst yourselves as you are accustomed, but you might want to also weigh in another issue. The comment threads are getting a bit fractious in general, and I keep hearing calls to ban so-and-so, throw whoever into the dungeon, crucify J. Random Idjit. I'm a little reluctant to use my vast powers so cavalierly, but I am considering whether I need to hold another Survivor: Pharyngula event just so everyone can blow off a little steam. Slaughtering a scapegoat always helps, doesn't it? Of course, I just get to play the…
The unending thread drifted onto the topic of cooking…but as usual, all the threads here always revolve around arguments. Then I realized that every thread is just another Abbott and Costello routine. (Current totals: 10,234 entries with 996,226 comments)
We've taking a little tour through Europe lately, and you know what that means: grab your rentboy and sing along. Keep on chatting. Long strokes, please. (Current tally: 10,212 entries with 992,807 comments.)
Time for more thread.
I'm in Orange County today, and I heard an odd comment that there was a dearth of godless music. I beg to differ: most music is godless, and I would point to rock as a genre that is almost entirely secular. You know, it doesn't have to be overt and announce that god doesn't exist to be compatible with freethought. Anyway, among the vendors at this conference was a band, Galt Aureus — I bought one of their "Arrest the Pope" t-shirts and they were nice enough to give me one of their CDs, which I've loaded up unto my iPod Touch for the flight home. And as long as I've been unforgivably…
I don't care what the last installment of the interminable thread was about — I have to show this horrifying clip of a gentle octopus's last moments beneath the jaws of ravening chordates. OK, now talk about whatever you want…if you can. (Current totals: 10,157 entries with 983,758 comments.)
The endless thread seems to be all caught up in British electoral politics lately…they all sound like a bunch of parliament groupies. Carry on. (Current totals: 10,140 entries with 981,135 comments.)
Time for more thread.
Nothing will dissuade the contributors to the evergrowing thread, not even another cheesy 1950s horror flick. Yak, yak, yak. (Current totals: 10,115 entries with 977,398 comments.)
Old thread cleansed with flamethrowers and bazookas; a new nest emerges! (Current totals: 10,075 entries with 973,299 comments)
The latest instantiation of the endless thread seems to be all about histories of use of interesting substances. Me, I like to get high on Christopher Walken. Continue as you were. Flying is optional. (Current total: 10,058 entries with 969,742 comments.)
That's how low The Thread has gone. What can I do but…feed the beast. Oh, sure, now try to talk about something other than "squeee!" and "how cute!" and "mmmm, now I'm hungry" after that. (Latest tally: 10,034 entries swamped by 965,742 total comments.)
Now I just have to figure out how to turn all your output into sweet, sweet nectar. I will refrain from making a big issue of the fact that the busy little bugs are secreting it out their asses. (Latest tally: 10,018 entries, 962,538 total comments. Keep on adding to them!)
There was much talk of music in the prior embodiment of the immortal thread, so I thought everyone would appreciate a special song. It's just like having a conversation with a god-bot. By the way, for you statistics freaks: the last thread hit the round-numbered landmark of 40,000 (nice number, makes me think of an excellent novel) comments in this linked parade of threads, with 959,854 total comments on Pharyngula, and this is the 9,999th entry I've posted here.
I'm in Syracuse. I had a hellish trip trying to get here yesterday, and now I have to catch a 6am flight back home. I had a grand time with the nice people here last night (including Hank Fox and Carl Buell), but now I have to remain conscious until I get aboard my plane, which feels like it won't be easy. At least I'll be getting home early today! Find something to talk about, I'll be back in action later.
It's not my fault if you won't let it die!
Time to spool out more thread.
Quick, here's a distraction! It's strange, but over the weekend we've had several threads top out over the magical 666 comment mark that I use as a signal to kill threads. There's the ever-expanding endless thread, of course, but also the Sins of omission thread, which is now being closed, and the These guys are dangerous nuts thread, which bloomed into chaos thanks to the wild and wacky Graeme Bird, who now, temporarily, has his own thread (I anticipate an imminent flameout and permanent eviction). Is it possible that one thread no longer has the capacity to contain the raging ebullience…
It happens now and then that some gibbering loon makes a persistent appearance somewhere on the blog, and the ensuing wrangle goes on and on and on. We've had just such an occurrence on this thread, which is bloating up to almost 700 comments now. Graeme Bird is an Australian wanna-be politician of the crank variety, a global warming denialist, anti-vaxer, anti-evolutionist and fan of ID, birther, truther, and like your typical obsessive kook, he just can't let it go, even though he's getting laughed at rather cruelly (and deservedly). Anyway, the thread is getting too long and with no…
The attack beasts of Pharyngula have been talking about their pets, so here are some vicious carnivores devouring their prey. Talk about whatever you want.
