Sometimes it is difficult to come up with new labs. Ideally, a lab should show use some of the basic physics principles as well as have something the students can measure. What to do with circular motion? I don't know how I forgot this, but here is a lab I used to do as an undergraduate student. I don't really know what that title actually means. So, I have been having problems with my PASCO projectile launcher devices. I will just call them launchers (they are really cannons). In my previous post, I looked at the launch speed from a launcher shot horizontally and vertically. The problem was that I was getting different launch speeds for the vertical and horizontal shot. So, here is my plan: shoot the ball and a variety of angles from 0 to 90 degrees and see how the launch speed changes. The last time I looked at this projectile motion lab, I was confused. My different methods for measuring the launch speed of the ball were not even close to being consistent. So, I am bringing out the big guns - video. I made a video of the ball shot both horizontally off the table and vertically. This is really a lab that I have students do, but I am pretty sure they don't read this blog - so it is ok. If they are reading this, hi! We have these projectile cannons that shoot small balls. I was shocked. After installing Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Tracker Video Analysis didn't work. This is one of my favorite programs for blogging. It appears that the problem is with 32 bit Java vs. 64 bit. I don't really understand why one doesn't work, but Tracker doesn't work with 64 bit Java and that is now the default for 10.6 You can fix it. Go to Java Preferences.app (under applications/utilities) and drag 32-bit above 64 bit. Maybe this is a little old (in internet age), but it is a great example. Here is the Loop-the-loop stunt from the show Fifth Gear. I like this. First, it is a bold stunt. But also, there is some good physics here. Though, most importantly, the Fifth Gear producers were kind enough to include a shot that was very compatible with video analysis. Forgive me if I don't know the official parkour term for this move. This is where you have two walls that are close to each other and you vertically climb them. Here is a shot of Mark Witmer (from Ninja Warrior) doing the wall climb. Doesn't look too hard, does it? Well, I think it depends on how far apart the two walls are. Maybe you have not seen it (doubtful), then here it is: This is such an incredible stunt that the very first question that comes up is - fake? or not fake? I have previously compared Tracker Video Analysis and Logger Pro - check that out here. Really, the only advantage Logger Pro has over Tracker is that maybe it is easier to use for simple things and maybe students are already familiar with it from other analysis. There are other video analysis programs out there. There is VideoPoint - but this is not free and I don't think it has been updated in quite some time. Also, don't forget Video Graph. Parkour: the act of running and jumping like a crazy superhero. I can't do any of it. But I can analyze it. Check this out (saw it on the interwebs): It's this video inside a bus of a girl hitting the roof. My first thought was: well, she just jumped. But something was odd. She was in the air too long. I am sure you noticed that the aspect ratio is incorrect (at least that was the first thing I noticed). The boys must have made a 16:9 video, but then uploaded it to youtube as a 4:3. This doesn't really affect the analysis, but I had to fix it. I used the awesome firefox plugin NetVideoHunter to download the video and then used MPEG Streamclip to resize the video. Yesterday, I uploaded a post from my old site about slowing down time to make videos look like they were on the moon. If you haven't read that, the short story is that it doesn't look right when speed Apollo videos up so that the acceleration is -9.8 m/s2. What started that whole thing was an even earlier post.
