FBI to research labs: beware of terrorist spies

This story sounds like it comes from the plot of a bad movie.

A couple of days ago the Globe reported that FBI agents will be visiting labs in the New England area.

I'm not kidding. They've already visited MIT, U Mass and BC. From the article:

Agents plan to visit many more New England colleges in the coming months and are offering to provide briefings about what they call "espionage indicators" to faculty, students, or security staff as part of a national outreach to college campuses.

Why?

The FBI's website says universities should consider the possibility of foreign spies posing as international students or visitors and terrorists studying advanced technologies and scientific breakthroughs on campus, as well as violent extremists and computer hackers.

The FBI has released an electronic wanted poster for you to look at. Somebody knows these people. Do you? You know what to do:
Not many scientists were convinced the FBI had a solid science case against accused anthrax attacker Dr. Bruce Ivins. So the FBI held a telephone conference call between journalists and their scientific back-up to answer outstanding questions.
In July 2005 when there was a terrorist bombing in the London subway system the FBI, using a perfectly valid and legal subpoena, asked for and obtained documents from North Carolina State University about a possible conspirator. That apparently wasn't good enough for the FBI.
I know, I know. This isn't exactly surprising. You might have heard that Bill O'Reilly claimed recently that the FBI had visited him to tell him he was on an Al Qaeda hit list. I laughed when I heard it, knowing it was probably a bunch of crap.

Alex:

Of course, no matter what the FBI finds or doesn't find, it means that the "terrorists" have won.

Not only are we taking our shoes off at airports, and we have to have passports to cross over into Canada, not we find our universities to be scrutinized for infiltration by those radical Islamists.

Or is this just a red-herring and he FBI is looking for something else?

See? My paranoia means the terrorists have really won.

My paranoia means the terrorists have really won.

Exactly.

Quiet! Big brother is watching.

Probably both... I hope the insanity stops in Nov 2008.
