So, my New Yorker subscription is about done, and I've decided not to renew it this time. This is a shame, because I've been getting it for almost three years now, and it's become a bit of comfortable habit now. Hard to beat some of the writing that is presented there, despite my disappointment at not cracking the "Shouts and Murmur" door.
Also, it's not that cheap (although, price per word, it's awesome value), but the thing is, is that I just can't keep up. Right now, I'm wondering if a better use of magazine reading time is to get something like the Economist (which I always get when I'm traveling), or maybe something I've never even heard of.
Anyway, in that light, any suggestions? I'm pretty open to anything.

Do you get UTNE reader. That's a pretty good one, from the left side of things. Mother Jones is also pretty nicely done.
How about "Harper's"? Well written, good mix of article types (politics, science, culture), fiction and non-fiction and it is a reasonably short read.
For all news and culture in bite-sized nuggets, take a look at "The Week".
I'm sure you will get a lot of other suggestions.

I loves me The Economist and its alternate universe cousin, Mother Jones. But keeping up remains a problem.
I did cancel the local daily paper, however.
I highly recommend The Economist as well. And for people on the go, they also have downloadable podcasts of their print magazine, avaiable usually even before you get your print copy.
National Geographic is getting increasingly interesting, as global climate change remixes geography.
ahh, the snooze yorker. I'm on my third year as a subscriber. I've tried Atlantic Monthly. Since they moved their HQ to DC, I found too many political insider pieces for my taste. Plus, they scrapped the fiction section to one issue a year. Harpers, though well written and entertaining, didn't seem to challenge my liberal assumptions quite enough to justify the time investment. The writing in the Economist is dry and and I seem to remember them botching a few science/tech pieces.
Rolling Stones is making a bit of a comeback since it's glory days. And Wired Magazine, if you can get past the tech porn, publishes some interesting pieces.
Yeah, the Economist is good, but I think it's even more expensive than the New Yorker - around $100 a year.
It's been a while since I picked up an issue of Harpers. Lately, I've been getting The Walrus which seems to be a Canadian equivalent of Harpers. The Walrus is great.

I vote Harper's, still the most independent-minded of the slick magazines. The New Republic for biweekly political coverage.
Wilson Qrt. is best round/wrap-up. Only every 2-3 months. Economist would be next choice followed by, really, Time.
Forgot to put in a plug for New Scientist - it's a weekly, lot of fun, though goofy at times.
Maxim! Just kidding. Count me as another vote for the Economist (looking to get my own subscription starting soon).

I love VQR, ReadyMade, New Scientist is fun, Cabinet is pretty and, of course Topic magazine where I am on the masthead.
The Atlantic bugs me and Harper's will cause you the same catch up problem.
Even more enticing are various lit journals all waving their arms at once.
