Sports Post

The Sports Guy has a running diary of last night's Super Bowl with all of the great lines you would expect from him. He thinks that the MVP trophy should have gone to the refs. Ouch. He also wondered the same thing I did when they were introducing the former Super Bowl MVPs before the game - what if OJ Simpson had been one of them? I actually wasn't sure if he'd ever been one, but there's no way they sould have invited him if he had.

Speaking of MVPs, ESPN is reporting that Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana were not among the MVPs introduced because they demanded that they be paid, to the tune of $100,000, for the appearance. If that's true (Montana denies it and says that he missed it because his son was playing an important basketball game), it's pretty ridiculous. If it's a family conflict, that's one thing. But why would you demand to be paid to go hang out with old teammates at the Super Bowl?

Lastly, Isiah Thomas proved once again why he is the single worst GM in the NBA, maybe ever in the NBA. This weekend, he traded Antonio Davis, whose $13.9 million contract was set to expire this year and who gave them experience and a solid work ethic in the low post (something the team needs badly) for Jalen Rose, a max player who is redundant with half the players on the Knicks roster and who is set to make almost $17 million next season. $17 million next season for another redundant player without a real position, a player averaging a whopping 12 points on 40% shooting for the year. And he'll either play in front of, and therefore take minutes and development away from, Trevor Ariza, Qyntel Woods and David Lee, their young small forwards, or he'll sit on the bench earning 5 times what he's worth at a minimum. Okay, I'll say it: who did he sleep with to get his job?

Given their tradition of French kissing Isaiah at center court, I'd say Magic Johnson. It would make sense because Magic doesn't know jack about running a team either.

Isaiah's a good example of a "name hire" that you see way too often in sports, college and pro. It doesn't seem to matter if a guy has won or lost, coached well or like an idiot, is well liked or loathed. It only matters how good it will make the owner or college president look at the cocktail parties where he hangs out with his buddies. If things go to hell, he can always just shrug and say "Hey, I brought in a name, what else do you want from me?"

Reason number 4,003 I love the Spurs -- quality guys, from the head coach on down, no flash, just solid work ethic. It's something Isaiah could learn a lot from if he could ever admit he didn't already know it all.

Concerning the refs and the Superbowl... yes, I'm one of the angry ones. It isn't because I'm a Patriots fan and the Steelers won- both teams played awful football for most of the game, but the Seahawkes were definitely worse than the Steelers. But after that Colts/Steelers game I'm begining to get very paranoid about cheating in the NFL. This year's Superbowl- maybe the worst in my lifetime (25 years)- did nothing to calm my fears.

It's time for the NFL to revamp its system when it comes to refs. Refs who consistantly make horrible calls, as happened last night and in the Colts/Steelers playoff game, should be fired and/or fined. When even viewers/commentators watching the play over and over in slow-mo can't spot the penalty that was called, something is very, very wrong.

Once again, I am not blaming the Steelers for any of this. I may hate them, but they played good, clean football. But they should be the most angry of all. They got the win they deserved, but it will forever be besmirched by the incompitance of the refs. At least The Bus got to go out on top. He's a fantastic player, and watching him- even if he was playing for The Enemy- was always a joy.

Ed,

Montana was the only one who demanded to be payed (Bradshaw says he missed because of family issues).

I would trade Antonio Davis if I were a GM. Not because he's a bad player, but because his wife is batshit insane. If he were on my team I would ban the woman from all games. The Chicago incident is not an isolated event. She has a consistent record of instability (http://cbs.sportsline.com/nba/story/9204828).

I think the problem was, Isiah couldn't get laid. Remember, he tried to score with the woman who's suing him. It's like that SNL skit with Tom Brady -- it's only sexual harassment if she doesn't want you. It appears that Isiah is inept in every department.

Montana says the same thing, so who knows what the truth is.

Maybe she should get together with Doug Christie's wife and Anna Benson and form a crazy sports wife club.
