SPL on Paul Cameron

The Southern Poverty Law Center has a full report on the ridiculous pseudo-scholarship of raving anti-gay loony Paul Cameron. There may not have been a less credible "scholar" in the last century. If he said the sky was blue, I'd double check his findings.

One thing that happened this week that I didn’t get around to writing about is the 100th anniversary of the birth of Jonas Salk, which was October 28.
Behe has written a very bad book, so poorly supported that I don't want to waste a lot of time taking apart every sentence, but I did want to say a few words about chapter 9, where he takes on evo-devo.
The other day, I read this fawning review by Andrew O'Hehir of Terry Eagleton's new book, Reason, Faith, and Revolution: Reflections on the God Debate, and was a little surprised.

NOW CAN I CALL THESE PEOPLE NAZIS?

"NOW CAN I CALL THESE PEOPLE NAZIS?"

Godwin's law broken already? Sheesh...

If we're going to go down that road, there are many eery similarities.

1) An irrational hatred based on something akin to racism.

2) In a form of cultural genocide, the fundies would like to convert all gays to heterosexuality.

3) If number two fails, there is a powerful legislative campaign to restrict the basic rights of homosexuals.

4) There is a powerful propaganda campaign devoted to demonizing homosexuals to ostracize them from the community at large. Oddly enough, this is partially accomplished through large gatherings where the speaker is adored by the masses with chants of "heil hitler"... I mean "amen".

5) Bullying of the judicial branch, with calls for impeachment, so it will bow to the tyranny of the legislative branch.

6) And, finally, they want an ever-powerful president with increasing executive authority to do what ever he wants in the name of security. That last point isn't directly about gays, but those powers could be eventually used to restrict the rights of minorities.

Sorry Ed, can you remove one of those?

There's more on Cameron here.
He managed to get published in a heretofore-possibly respectable journal, the Journal of Biosocial Science.
The paper, "Children of homosexuals and transsexuals more apt to be homosexual," is based not on a narrow sample, a self-selected sample, of any of the more common failings, but on a trio of books purchased on Amazon.
The analysis at the above-cited Box Turtle Bulletin, like the SPLC report, shows what a total fraud this hateful man is.

NOW CAN I CALL THESE PEOPLE NAZIS?

Depends: Is he a Nazi? Not from what I've seen. Nazi isn't a catch-all term for intolerant nut-jobs. If Paul Cameron was living in 1940's Germany he probably would be a Nazi. The rediculous pseudo-science would fit right in. And if Fred Phelps lived in 1940's Germany, he'd be an extermination camp guard. But they're not living in the third reich, and from what I've seen they've picked up a different brand of intolerant bs than naziism.
