WV School Decides to Drop Jesus Picture

Now that the Jesus picture has been stolen, the school board has made a settlement offer to the plaintiffs in the case - drop the lawsuit and we'll agree not to put the picture back up if it's recovered.

The Harrison County school board decided Thursday to ask Americans United for Separation of Church and State and the American Civil Liberties Union to dismiss the case it filed in June.

In return, the board promises, "if the reproduction is retrieved, [it] will not put the reproduction back up as it was previously situated," according to a resolution passed 5-0.

I suspect they'll accept that offer if it's worded a bit more broadly.

More like this

He [Board member Mike Queen] said the person who stole the painting might be affiliated with one of the civil liberties groups.

Yeah, that damn Barry Lynn is always stealing stuff. He came to my house once and when he left this killer bong I had was gone.

he was speaking later that day to a group at the local Unitarian church and was clearly baked off his ass.

During the Q&A session after the talk I raised my hand, stood up and said, "Dude! Did you take my bong?"

He just stood there and giggled for like fifteen minutes. Man, I was pissed.

All those separation of church and state guys are snakes. Steal a guy's bong. Eesh.

So they won't put it "back up as it was previously situated" That sounds like weasel wording to me. Instead of the social studies classroom, the science room will do instead. I suspect they wouldn't put it in a display of religious figures from non-Christian religions which is the only way I can see it going up anyplace in a public building without violating the constitutional provisions about the state not supporting a particular religion. Do I need to note that I am a Christian and have served my denomination from the local to national levels, so it's not that I'm against Christianity, I am against imposing one variety of Christianity on anyone in the guise that all Christians agree.
