Just a quick link to a stunning photo of Mauna Kea in Hawai'i taken April 29, 2009 from the International Space Station. You can clearly see the pyroclastic material and abundant cinder cones that litter the flanks of the volcano.

I lived in Hawaii for 3 years, from 1949 to 1952. I have a postcard bought on Waikiki Beach showing the Mauna Kea volcano erupting in that period. I also flew over the crest of the volcano as it was erupting in a Navy twin engine aircraft as a passenger with 2 Naval Officers, one a Capitan and the other a Lt. Commander.
