If you don't have a spare computer, want to try out a Linux distribution, and are a little intimidated by the details of setting up a dual-boot, check out Wubi. It makes a dual-boot pretty much a "one-click" affair, loading up the Ubuntu distribution via a Windows installer.
Most linux distributions (including UBUNTU) also have a live-disk option where you can run the linux OS through memory to try it out. just put the disk in boot to the cd and then enjoy your linux environment on any computer.

this is true. but i've had problems with the USB boot option working on some laptops. but i guess that's just the intersection of linux with notebooks in general....

No, it doesn't require a partition. Files get put in a single directory on your Windows partition. It's easy to set up and if it doesn't like your hardware, it's easy to remove.
I downloaded that a while back, but it advised to back up my files before I installed it and I never got around to doing that.

yeah, i think a cheap external hard drive that you sync every day or so is really worth the money. no need to back up or worry about a hard drive melt down.
