Not everything gets posted on the blog (though people who follow me on Twitter, FriendFeed or Facebook may catch some of these blips), so here's a quick summary of the past few weeks:
===========
Most important news first - there is a new kid on the block! Not exactly my block, but close enough -…
I've been thinking a lot about how to support victims and their families in Japan since the earthquake and tsunami struck last Friday.
Ben Parr at Mashable gives us some simple, concrete ways we can help in his article, "Japan Earthquake & Tsunami: 7 Simple Ways to Help." Please do what you…
Yesterday I spent the day at the RTP headquarters, attending TEDxRTP. The TEDx conferences are small, locally organized offshoots of the well-known TED conference.
This was the first TEDx in the Triangle region (though Asheville beat us as being the first in the state) and, judging from the…
It's a strange world after all, and I'll show you why.
Last night, as I deposited myself on my couch with my laptop sitting on my lap, there to churn out yet another installment of the insolence most of you love and a few of you love to hate read, I had a Dug the Dog moment. The squirrel in this…
So will they insist that government programs be scientifically evaluated, like Head Start and affirmative action? How about insisting that people acknowledge differences between men and women in abilities and interests, which the anti-science folks at Harvard drove out Larry Summers for saying?
TFS here made me both happy and sad.

This seemed an appropriate place to put this.
"Mike" here makes me sad that some abuse the ability to move and communicate.
A better place to start would be a study to detrimental just how deep miken's lack of knowledge is. It seems boundless.
Do you agree that Larry Summers was being unscientific in his statements and should have been thrown out as President of Harvard for suggesting that women may have different interests as men and this explains the disparity in science majors?
"Do you agree that Larry Summers was being unscientific in his statements"
Yes, there is no doubt of that
Study? Data? Analysis?
Or merely a reach into his own nether regions?
Larry Summers offered a possible explanation to be studied. He did not declare it as fact. This was unacceptable to the scientists present. The idea that women have different interests and emotions made Nancy Hopkins of MIT 'physically ill'.
No MikeN, it was presented as a done deal, contradicting the current state of research. Asserting something not established, as he did, simply because it seems reasonable, is not valid.
I can see why your ilk believes it though - you have shown yourself to have no regard for the things data actually says.
Because data gets in the way of The Holy Ideology. Ergo, it, and the accursed Science, must be smitten!
Is it fair for a scientist to lose his job for making a statement like this?
Dick has changed his socks because he's not going to get away with denying straight up maths, and has had to admit to error, so he's now reappeared as MikeN to continue the rightwing charge against reality and it's damn liberal bias.
Take a look at that chart. Do you find it strange that boys are outperforming girls in the Americas and Northern and Western Europe(or at least it's about even), while the Middle East shows girls doing better? I think it is in line with what I expected based on what Larry Summers said.
Again, why would boys be outperforming girls in these countries?
Even if the girls are performing better than the boys, what Summers said would still hold, where he spoke of(or alluded to, the transcript is not available) the variation being higher for boys.
