I'm so excited I know this! THAT is a spot-bellied eagle owl, he of the normal-sounding name and abnormal appearance! Field marks include the fake-looking Furby eyes, fabulous horns, and pretty brown-speckled belly. Mostly the bizarre eyes though (at least for me). You never forget those!

I could have sworn it was Geoff. Or Juha.

Ha! Now I've commented on your blog, the blackmail can begin...

That's kinda wonderful, thanks. rb

Well, I don't know what it is really, but to me it looks like something Jim Henson made... Who brought a Muppet to life?

HI:
It looks like a Barred Eagle-Owl. Its ear tufts and black-and-white barring indicate that species.

Definitely a Barred Eagle Owl. The dark eyes are quite unique among the eagle owls, and there's the ear tufts and the black and white pattern on the front.

I got this one from my New Holland feild guide to the birds of southeast asia. Barred Eagle Owl, Bubo Sumatranus(differentiated from Spot-bellied by the barred belly. ) .
