MISSOULA, MT--University of Montana wildlife biologist and Herbert R. Braithwaite Foundation research grant recipient Dr. James Neuthom has spent his entire $275,000 grant--intended for the study of whirling disease on rainbow trout--on such items as a 15-foot sailboat, scented stationery, and several dozen boxes of chocolate, according to documents he submitted to the foundation Tuesday.

Neuthom spent $7,000 on a trip with Hamilton to Lake Tahoe, which contains no trout.

Neuthom is now seeking additional Braithwaite Foundation funds to continue his desperate attempt to win the heart of his 23-year-old research assistant, Betsy Hamilton.

Excellent! My grant request to study the stimulation effects of $500.00+ bottles of wine on members of the opposite sex is on it's way! Control group will be here at a large Mid-Western University, and the unselfish experimental group, which I of course will lead, will endure a projected brutal several months summer travel program through Rome, Paris, and Athens, with a much needed re-charge the batteries down time scheduled in Taiwan.

My undergrad advisor knew a guy who used leftover money from a grant that was about to expire to buy ipods for his entire lab. It was pretty sketchy, as I believe the grant was for something to the effect of studying usability in small electronic devices.
